Adopt a Family:

The Adopt a Family program is a joint effort between I.A.M. Local 1842, Joy Global, and the O.P.E.I.U. that started seventeen years ago. Our purpose is to give underprivileged kids and their families in Venango County a Christmas that they otherwise would not have. We do this by sending out collection envelopes to our Stewards, Engineering, Office, and Office Union people. Joy Global(Komatsu) matches dollar for dollar up to $1500.00. The Engineering “Pop” Fund gives us a sizable donation every year as well as our own Local. The families we help are chosen by Venango County Community Services and are eligible one time only. When the monies are collected, they are given to volunteers to shop for the families using lists of needs the families have given. The shoppers bring the gifts to Joy(Komatsu) and the gifts are wrapped. A date is then chosen to deliver all the gifts. We split up into two delivery groups, each with their own Santa Claus. Leftover funds buy each family a ham, candy canes, potatoes, and a clothes basket full of essentials. Remaining funds are divided evenly between the families with a gift certificate to either buy additional food or gasoline. Our motto has always been to give a helping hand up, not just a hand out. Many of these families are working minimum wage jobs and need some help. To date we have helped approximately 180 families in our area by purchasing things like winter coats, boots, mittens, hats, toys, clothes, furniture, appliances, and many, many, other items that were desperately needed. This would not be possible without the generous people who work at Joy Global(Komatsu). The fact that this program is still going strong after twenty years speaks of how caring the people of Joy(Komatsu) really are. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the countless number of people at Joy Global(Komatsu) for making this possible by donating money and or volunteering their time to make this program successful.
